Reading about Frida Kahlo + Pronunciation

For improve pronunciation it is not enough just to wish for it, as in everything else, it is necessary to a lot of effort, constant practice, and good materials or sources.. Although the results in spontaneous speech begin to be seen in the medium/long term, reading results can come very soon And when they arrive, I know that we have almost won, and it is certainly something to celebrate.

On this pronunciation journey (foreign accent reduction), reading plays a very important role. I remember how the students in China would read aloud the texts to learn them and also to practice pronunciation. I found it curious because, many times, I did not understand what they were saying and, I thought, by repeating it incorrectly, they were going to create a bad habit. Over time, I have realized how damaging bad habits in pronunciation can be. They are so hard to change!

We can divide the road to Spanish pronunciation improvement and integration in 4 phases:

  • Listen to
  • Guided practice
  • Reading aloud
  • Spontaneous speech

Once the first two phases are over (which I have talked about in other posts, and will continue to do so!), it's time to work on reading aloud. To do so, one of the techniques is to mark in a text the aspect of pronunciation previously worked on, and then read out loud try to pronounce the sound or suprasegmental element in question. To check that you are getting it right, simply record yourself and listen to yourself or, ask someone with a modicum of hearing to listen to you to see if that element is in your reading.

The following activity will help you to improve your joints and pauses. The Spanish accent is so important in the rhythm and accent when speaking Spanish.

The steps are as follows:

  • Read the text.
  • Mark the pauses.
  • Mark the joints.
  • Listen to the text and check if you have marked the joins and pauses. Think that the position of the pauses can be variable, and that a pause breaks the join.
  • See the following pages, where the pauses and junctions are marked according to the reading speed.
  • Listen to the text, stop after one or two pauses and repeat taking into account the joins, trying to imitate.
  • Read and listen to the text again as many times as you want, practicing the joins and pauses.

At this link you can listen to the text at two speeds.
