(Listen to this entry as a "blogcast" or continue scrolling down to read it)

As we told you in the previous entrywe will give you more hints so that you can understand the use of irony in colloquial conversations.

So far we have explained two phonic indicatorsThe ironic intonation and syllabication. And two linguisticThe superlative and the diminutive.

Below we show you three more linguistic indicators, and .....

.... 3 gestures!

POSITION OF THE ADJECTIVE

Independently of the use of the superlative, adjectives can be marked ironically if we put them before the noun.

For example:

Often gift, brave soldier, very beautiful suit.

Listen to the following audio. It is a fragment of a real conversation in which two people talk about a gift that another person gave to his girlfriend. Notice how they pronounce "menudo regalo" and "gran regalo". Can you see the irony?

THE HYPERBOLE

Hyperbole is the exaggeration of a fact or circumstanceand can be used to make it clear that you are being ironic, so that the other person can see that you are being ironic. do not interpret literally what we say.

SIGNAL WORDS

For to point out directly or indirectly the irony of a statement we can add some specific words.

If we want to do it directly we could add: ironically, ironically, with a twinkleetc.

If we want to do it indirectly we could add, for example:

... get it*?

…. get it*?

*Pillar y catch in this context mean "to understand".

In the video below you can see some examples.
